Life in Slums


For those living in slums the outlook is bleak. The following statistics speak for themselves:

  1 in 5 children suffer from vision related problems.

 1 in 9 chidlren suffer from ear related problems. 

 4 out of 5 chidlren with vision or hearing problems do not attend school.  Vision and hearring problems are leading causes of drop out among children from slums who attend school.

 40% of children living in slums are severely malnourished. 

 Of children living in slums of Patna and Delhi, about 40,000 children are laborers, 30,000 assist in shops, another 30,000 work in tea shops, and 20,000 in auto repair shops. 100,000 children are part time or full time domestic helps and have no access or opportunities for education.

 80% of adults living in slums are illiterate.
